The issue of fairness

We, humans, passionately want fairness, and justice. Why is this so important for us?

Perhaps because we recognize that “human nature out of control” makes for a very unstable society:

At his best, man is the noblest of all animals; separated from law and justice he is the worst.

Aristotle

The only stable state is the one in which all men are equal before the law.

Aristotle

Not everything could be controlled by law, though.

For example,  you believe your colleague to be far more successful than you, whilst you are doing the same job; you might feel suffering of envy and jealousy: “ its so unfair!”.

Or if you wife told you she doesn’t love you anymore, and left you- how is that fair? She promised to love you, all your life, for better for worse!

So, if the state cannot help you with the emotional pains of “unfairness” described above, what are you to do?

One approach is to accept things as they are in a philosophical sort of way:

There is only one way to happiness and that is to cease worrying about things which are beyond the power or our will.

Epictetus

Or you could decide to tap into your inner strength, and become a more successful and stronger person:

The weak are always anxious for justice and equality. The strong pay no heed to either.

Aristotle

Whatever you do in your life, there will be a number of occasions where your heart is troubled by the suffering of “unfairness”. If you could let it go, it’s the best outcome, but so not easy to achieve:

Letting go of our suffering is the hardest work we will ever do.

Gautama Buddha
